5 Awesome Eco-friendly Home Décor Ideas for Sustainable Living

With the rising global warming, we are sitting on a ticking clock of limited resources. If we all don’t make efforts towards an eco-friendly lifestyle, we along with our future generations, are in for some serious troubles going ahead. Our collective efforts can do wonders in this direction. I am planning to refurbish our apartment, so with the perspective of consciously choosing eco-friendly options, I did some research and came up with a few ideas.

Choosing eco-friendly home decor ideas doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to compromise on the vision you have for your house; it just involves mindful planning and execution. A home is a place where we find our best comfort so, we wish it to be perfect, filled with positive vibes and harmony for all the people living in it.

How does Eco-friendly design benefit us?

  • Healthier environment at home with a lesser negative impact on nature.
  • Lesser emissions of toxic chemicals at home.
  • Saving resources like electricity, water, soil, money and reducing carbon footprints.
  • Finding raw materials which are easily replenishable.

Here are 5 suggestions which I found to be easy implementable for that dream look of your house.

Old is Gold:

Old vintage items will always enhance the look of your house. It’s time to dig in the khazana which our parents have stored for years at home. I personally plan to recycle my mother’s trunks – yes the big aluminium and wood trunks our parents and grandparents brought in their weddings as decor and furniture. The trunks can be painted and colourful designs can be made. Those trunks are so sturdy and so for storage that they can be of multipurpose use.

Most of us redecorate our homes from time to time, in turn, we store some items and forget about them. It’s time to recycle and re-use that stuff.

We all have some classic We all have some classic items of our grandparents which we wish to keep safe, like gramophones, brass decor stuff, paintings and posters, it’s time to give that stuff a new look in our house.

Give a feel of fresh air at home:

A lot of us took to gardeA lot of us took to gardening during the pandemic time. People experimented with flowers and homegrown vegetables as well. We should continue with the good work. The first flower that bloomed or the fresh vegetables we plucked from our garden, that feeling is immensely satisfying.

We have a variety of plants both indoor and outdoor, giving a lease of fresh air at home, especially in the cities where air quality is not worth talking about. Its works like a therapy that calms you down and gives your home a fabulous look.

Non-Toxic Paints on your walls:

Thankfully, for our benefit, all the leading paints have come up with better products that release lesser toxic chemicals like VOCs (Volatile Organic Components) and gases. These chemicals are harmful to the environment as well as us. There are options for eco-friendly paints.

We dont have to compromise on our wishes, just need to make the right choice.

Eco-friendly Wallpapers:

The usage of wallpapers has increased multi-fold in recent times. It’s a great way to give a new look to your home with lesser effects. That’s the reason, you have a wide range of options to choose from when it comes to wallpapers. Vinyl based wallpapers release vinyl chloride in our homes which is a known human carcinogen.

Paper-based wallpapers with no coating and a higher proportion of waste paper make a great choice. An array of safe, eco-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing wallcovering materials like natural fibres or grasscloth papers, bamboo, tree barks etc exists in the market.

Support Local Artisans:

In India, we are fortunate to have a rich culture and heritage. We have so many fascinating art forms across the country that picking a few of them will give life to our homes. Most of the local handicrafts our artisans make are eco-friendly and don’t harm nature.

OOur elders recycled old bedsheets and blankets to make rugs and carpets. So many artisans do the same. Such products are long-lasting, great quality, sustainable, helps improve our own country’s economy and lightens our home. Isn’t it a paisa vasool option?

These are a few options that I plan to implement to give my home the dream makeover I plan for. Some of these options are cost-effective while, some are expensive. However, if I keep our future and health in mind it’s worth my effort and money. It’s time we invest in the right direction.
