My Top 7 Picks of Ron Perlman’s Roles

Ronald Perlman or Ron Perlman is an acclaimed American Hollywood actor with more than three decades of work to speak for himself. He has worked in television, films, stage and as a voice-over actor.

Science fiction, thrillers and mysteries are my favourite genres both for movies and television series. On one of the weekend, my husband chose to watch ‘The Name of the Rose’ which is a mystery and historical drama directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Perlman’s performance of ‘Salvatore’ was remarkable that is how I got introduced to this famous star. Post that I happened to watch and enjoy a lot of his wonderful films and television series.

I shall share my top 7 picks for Ron Perlman roles which are a treat to watch out for.

Cronos (film)

An alchemist builds a sophisticated device called ‘Cronos’ in 1536 in Mexico which provides immortality to the owner. In the present time, an antique dealer – Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) finds the device in an ancient statue and triggers it. The owner of this device has to pay a heavy price for this immortality as the person becomes averse to daylight and hungry for human blood. De la Guardia (Claudio Brook), a dying millionaire discovers about this device sends and he sends his nephew Angel de la Guardia (Ron Perlman) to fetch it for him. What follows subsequently in the story, I leave for you to see.

I am not a person who has watched many horror films, but this thriller-horror film is one of the rare watches which kept me glued to the television screen. A fab performance by Perlman!

Hellboy (film)

Who would have missed Ron Perlman in these movies? While writing about this I feel like watching both again. Based on graphic novels by Mike Mignola both the movies are a must-watch if you are a Ron Perlman fan.

The director-actor combination of – Guillermo del Toro & Ron Perlman has given some wonderful movies like Cronos and Hellboy. In-fact while filming Cronos, Guillermo del Toro had taken loans and bank debts to complete the film. For the final completion of the film some changes needed to be done, Ron Perlman took a huge salary cut for the same. It’s said that they have been good friends ever since and they share a great working rapport.

Ron Perlman did not work in the recent of Hellboy series because he mentioned that he wanted to be a part of the versions which was concerned with Guillermo only. The movie did not fare well at the box office some believe that what Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman created was iconic not be meddled with.

Beauty and the Beast (1987 TV series)

Based on the popular story this is an American fantasy drama television series with three seasons to its credit. Starring Ron Perlman as Vincent a mythic, noble man-beast and Linda Hamilton as Catherine, who plays a District Attorney in New York. Unlike the original tale, this is not a typical romantic drama. As the series evolves you see an empathetic bond developing between the lead characters and Vincent becomes her guardian angel.

The storyline was intriguing, and I liked the spin-off on the original tale. Also, Ron Perlman won a Golden Globe Award for this one.

The Name of the Rose (film)

This had to feature in my list right, my first Ron Perlman watch. It is an Italian – German – French mystery based on the novel by the same name written by Umberto Eco. Without revealing the plot because it’s worth a watch, I would say Ron Perlman role as Salvatore was a strong one. The film did not fare well at the box office as expected however, I found it gave peak in the era gone by with some fantastic performances.

Star Trek: Nemesis and Blade II

I am part of the Marvel fan club thanks to my husband. We have watched all the movies together. Ron Perlman does not have huge roles in these movies, but they are noteworthy.

In fact, in 2010 Perlman spoke to Startrek.com that although his role in Star Trek: Nemesis required a lot of prosthetics, he wanted to star in a Star Trek movie which his wish was fulfilled.

Quest for Fire (film)

Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, this prehistoric fantasy adventure film was critically acclaimed and won many awards including the Academy and BAFTA Awards for Best Makeup. The title of the film describes its storyline as three men are set in their quest to find fire and in their journey to find it, they encounter various adventures.

Ron Perlman’s acting skills could not be hidden behind the major prosthetics used and his performance was well appreciated.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Tangled

A small role played by Ron Perlman as Gnarlack, a goblin in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ stands out. He perfectly fitted the character and made it come alive on the screen. I am a Potterhead and I believe that big or small roles each character lend to bring the story alive in front of our eyes.

Tangled is one of my favourite animated films, a mood lifter for me. It was surprising for me when I learnt that Ron Perlman had done the voice over for Stabbington Brother.

A good performance for a second or hours leaves a mark that is how I would summarize Ron Perlman’s appearances. A multi-talented actor his work is distinguished!

Do share your favourite Ron Perlman role/movie with me 😊
