We all use different body lotions to keep our skin hydrated. Likewise, you keep one handy for your little one too.

As a new or expecting mother, you may be having many questions in mind like –

Well, we all do quite a bit of research when it comes to selecting products for us. And when it comes to our little ones, we are extra cautious and alert while arriving at any selection. I have personally gone through this phase.

I did a lot of research while choosing products for my little one and continue to do so.

Let me help you answer a few of the questions there in your mind from my experience.

Does a newborn require body lotion?

When we put our hands and fingers in water for a long period, we notice wrinkles on our skin, right. Imagine our little one in the womb is surrounded by amniotic fluid continuously for its protection. Nature takes care of everything, our little one is covered with a white cheese-like waxy substance called vernix caseosa.

This protective layer keeps your baby’s skin hydrated and protects from infections in the womb. Post-delivery your baby may have more or less of this protective coating. We should ideally not remove it because it has multiple benefits.

With the presence of this protective coating your baby may not require a body lotion immediately, however, if you see dryness especially on ankles, elbows or hands then you should moisturise the skin immediately. Also, weather can affect the skin and make it dry, your little one is just getting exposed to this new environment and building his/her immune system so taking all precautions is imperative.

Are baby lotions safe for my baby’s sensitive skin?

Well if a mother comes to it, we may start making every product that our baby requires at home. However, it’s kind of humanly impossible with all the changes a mother is dealing herself with along with her newborn.

A baby may need a body lotion in case of dryness due to various reasons. Also, since the baby’s skin is delicate and sensitive it is prone to eczema, you may need to use a lotion in this case as well. When choosing a baby lotion, one needs to use a product that is mild, fragrance-free, has natural ingredients and should not have parabens and phthalates as these chemicals can be harmful.

Selecting the right product ensures safety for your little one.
