Chala Hawa Yeu Dya – A Comic Show, Worth Your Time On ZEE5!

“Watch it. It’s worth your time” my husband told me as he left for his business trip. He loves comedy shows. English, Hindi, Marathi – not necessarily in that order! So when he advocates for a comedy show, I am surely watching it!

So I typed – Chala Hawa Yeu Dya and searched it online. It took me to ZEE5 website. I clicked on a random episode and then got hooked on it completely. The show recently completed 400 episodes! I was stunned. 400 episodes of a show which is built on pure comedy! Amazing!

In my opinion, what has worked for the show:

* The script – My standing ovation to the writers. To carve out comic situations from popular culture on a regular basis is just awesome. The dialogues are also in-line with the characters and celebrities featuring on the show. They did a skit on ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ when the Madhuri Dixit and Renuka Shahane were the guests. It was hilarious!

* The comic timing – In my opinion, one of the toughest part as an actor on such shows is to get your comic timing correct. The laughter completely matters on the comic timing of the actors. When Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni had come to the show to promote their movie, they did a skit on Tiranga where Sagar Karande and Kushal Badrike proved how timing creates the impact and converts a simple conversation to a hilarious one!

* The teamwork – For comedy to work, you need to have every person on the team to be on top of their game. You might have done all the work in rehearsals but out there on the stage is where the real test is! To improvise on an on-stage mistake also is a much-needed skill. Staying on track with the script, allowing the audience to enjoy the comic scene and then getting back to the script can only be achieved through rehearsals and teamwork on stage.

* Right actor for the right character – As an audience, we are always switched on to see whether the character is picked up in the right way by the actor. We love it if it’s done well or we switch off and start picking up the fault in the actor’s performance. The dialogue delivery, the mannerisms, the body language etc. needs to be picked up appropriately to give an awesome experience to the celebrity guests on the show as well as the audience.

After seeing these episodes, I can imagine only Kushal Badrike as Rajnikant, Sunil Shetty and ACP. Only Sagar Karande can do justice to Makarand Anaspure, Nana Patekar. The list continues but these are few actors and characters which stay with you for a long time even after you stop watching the show.
